Visiting the Ancient City
The first step of our private tour will inevitably be the exploration of Ancient Rome. Here, you will visit the very sites of the first settlements of Rome, a small village that during the centuries grew to the point of becoming the greatest and most populated city of the ancient world, with more than one million people! Your tour guide will be waiting for you at the entrance of the Colosseum (of course your driver knows the meeting point, you don’t have to worry about anything) with your tickets. Your guide will take you inside the Colosseum and explain the amazing history of this incredible building and stories of the men who built it and (partially) destroyed it. To know more about the famous Roman amphitheater please feel free to read our free Complete Guide To The Colosseum. After a tour of the Colosseum you will enter the Roman Forum that, together with the Palatine Hill, constitutes one of the largest and most beautiful archeological sites in the world. The Roman Forum was basically the city center of the Ancient City, where all the most important public buildings were built since the foundation of Rome in 753 BC, and all the most important public events took place, including the cremation of Julius Cesar. Many of the ancient buildings are still standing today, like the Roman Senate. You will then start moving towards the center of today’s Rome.
Rome City Center
What incredible city Rome is! Can you imagine another place with so many layers? Can you imagine a city where you have not just the seat of the local government and the national government of the state which it belongs to, but also the seat of another state altogether, whose representatives are everywhere, and whose presence and symbols are all around you? But that is the standard in Rome. It is as hard for the Romans to disentangle all the threads as it for foreign visitors to make a sense out of it. Rome is absurd. Rome is complicated. Rome is modern and ancient. Rome is Baroque and Classical at the same time. Rome is Renaissance. Rome is Fascism. Rome, Rome, Rome. Rome is everything. Visiting Rome city center with our expert tour guide will leave you breathless. At every step, at every corner, there is a reminder of its peculiar beauty. You will walk through the winding streets of Rome and see its most famous landmarks through an itinerary specifically designed for this Rome private tour, covering Piazza Navona, the Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. You will have time here to stop for a short lunch break before meeting with driver again, and move on with the second part of our Rome tour: Vatican City.
A state within a city. A minuscule nation ruled by a spiritual leader, guardian to likely the greatest concentration of beauty in the world, one of the largest art collection ever. Once arrived at the Vatican, your guide will firstly lead you to the Vatican Museums and take you through the corridors and the rooms that were once walked by powerful popes and cardinals, and host today masterpieces of unparalleled value and beauty, representing the best works of artists of the caliber of Raphael, Caravaggio, Michelangelo, Bernini and many more. If this is your first time at the Vatican, this is an experience that can inspire a life change. During this tour of the Vatican museums, you will admire masterpieces like the Laocoön Group and the Belvedere Torso, but also famous works like Raphael’s Rooms and Michelangelo’s Last Judgment in the Sistine Chapel. We mention Michelangelo’s work in the Sistine Chapel, but we could as well mention the names of Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio and others who worked there creating a world at the same time so close and so far from the one we live in. Visiting the Sistine Chapel (learn more about it with our Complete Guide To The Sistine Chapel) is a full immersion experience into beauty, art and inspiration. After visiting the Sistine Chapel your tour guide will take you to St Peter’s Basilica through a passage that you would not be allowed to go through without a guide. If you are by yourself you would need to go out and stand in line again to the enter the Basilica. This is the last step of our cruise itinerary of Rome. St Peter’s Basilica surpasses any other church you have seen for its magnificence. You will be left speechless. But that’s ok, because your tour guide will talk! He or she will tell you everything about this amazing site and answer all the questions you might have! At the exit your private driver will be there to pick you up and accompany you back to the port of Civitavecchia in time for your boarding procedures.
