ROME, A MULTILAYERED CITY
Since its foundation on April 21, 753 BC, Rome has played a pivotal part in world history and civilization. During its expansion and transformation over the centuries — from a small group of villages on the Tiber into a huge, cosmopolitan city with more than 3 million inhabitants — Rome has been the scene of major historical events, religious changes, and artistic innovations.
On our Rome tours, we show you the multi-layered history of the Eternal City. This is the city where an Ancient Roman pagan temple was transformed into a Catholic church, and became the burial place of one of the greatest artists of all time; this is the city where a 16th century palazzo sits above the remains of a Roman theater, next door to a church supported by the columns of three subterranean pagan temples; this is the city of fountains, arches, columns, domes, and secrets that can only be discovered by those who know where to look…
We take you on a journey through Roman history, visiting not only the Colosseum but also the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the core of Rome Ancient City.
Once the centre of public and political life, the Roman Forum is now the most impressive archaeological site in Rome, attracting more than 4.5 million visitors every year.
It’s only when you’re walking in the footsteps of the Ancient Romans along the Via Sacra that you begin to get a sense of the Roman Forum’s importance.
You’re standing in the very centre of the ancient city that once ruled the world.
THE COLOSSEUM AND BEYOND, EXPLORING ANCIENT ROME
Our Colosseum tours takes you on a journey through Roman history, visiting not only the Colosseum but also the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, the core of Rome Ancient City. Accompanied by one of our professional, English-speaking guides, you’ll visit the Colosseum — the vast amphitheater that was constructed in 79 AD. Up to 50,000 people gathered here to watch the spectacles — shows that ranged from bloody gladiatorial combat and violent re-enactments of Greek myths to animal hunts and naval battles.
On your tour of ancient Rome, you’ll also walk the streets of the Roman Forum. This area was at the heart of political and public life in Ancient Rome, as a venue for public speeches, triumphal marches, and trials. The sprawling ruins of the Roman Forum are some of the most impressive Roman ruins in the city, including the magnificent Temple of Saturn and the evocative remnants of the House of the Vestal Virgins. After a Roman Forum tour, you’ll climb the nearby Palatine Hill — once home to aristocracy and emperors — to see the remains of the imperial palace and stadium, and to admire breathtaking panoramic views of Rome.
For an even more in-depth Colosseum experience, join our Colosseum Underground tour. You’ll have exclusive access to parts of the amphitheater that most visitors don’t get to see, exploring the atmospheric tunnels beneath the arena floor where gladiators and wild animals would have once awaited their entrance. This special tour also includes a visit to the top tier of the Colosseum, which offers spectacular views of the amphitheater.
Sit in the Golden Vault room on futuristic iron cubes, wear 3D devices and look at the Domus Aurea and ancient Rome as it was 2,000+ years ago
Now you can also explore Ancient Rome, including the Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill on our unique ancient Rome tour of Nero’s palace (Domus Aurea in Latin, the Golden House) only recently reopened to the public.
In addition to the underground hard-hat adventure through the buried tunnels of Nero’s palace, this unique itinerary includes an unforgettable virtual reality experience inside the so-called Golden Vault Room. Here, you will sit below the ancient vault on black futuristic iron cubes, wear 3D devices and look at the Domus Aurea and ancient Rome as it was 2,000 years ago, reconstructed by professional developers and archaeologists. Admire the imperial stunning decorations, frescoes, and marbles that have stunned the discoverers, and influenced visual art, architecture and interior designs for the next 500 years.
Once inside the Golden Vault Room, you will have a vivid impression of traveling back in time and just be walking around Nero’s pleasure palace. But that’s not all. Our Domus Aurea tour is one of the most comprehensive Rome tours in town, as it includes the archaeological area of the Colosseum – with an inside visit to the world-famous Flavian amphitheater, first and second rings – Roman Forum and Palatine Hill. Don’t miss any part of the most famous archaeological site in the world and choose a Colosseum tour in Rome that has it all.
Discover the sights of the centro storico (historic center) on Roma Experience’s original small-group tour of Rome city center or on a private Heart of Rome tour. As you stroll through the streets of Rome city center — from narrow medieval alleys to grand Baroque piazzas — you’ll learn all about the rich, complex history of the Eternal City. In the company of your expert tour guide you’ll not only see some of the most iconic sights in Rome, but you’ll also gain greater understanding of the people and events that transformed the city.
Highlights of our city center Rome tours include the Pantheon, Campo de Fiori, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. You’ll also explore Piazza Navona and the vibrant shopping district known as the Tridente. If you’ve ever wanted to know the correct way to throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, or been intrigued by the mysteries of the Pantheon, join us for an unforgettable city center tour. You can also visit Rome city center in the early morning to avoid the crowds and have the chance to take wonderful pictures with the perfect natural light!
One of our most popular private tours in Rome is our visit to the Borghese Gallery. Located in the beautiful Villa Borghese park, the Borghese Gallery is unmissable for anyone even remotely interested in art and culture. With a collection including masterpieces by Bernini, Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio, the Borghese Gallery is second only to the Vatican Museums.
On your Borghese Gallery tour, you’ll visit the collection in the company of an art historian, seeing works such as Bernini’s masterwork Apollo and Daphne, and Titian’s enigmatic Sacred and Profane Love. As you admire these beautiful artworks, you’ll learn all about the lives of the artists, of his mentor and mecenate cardinal Scipione Borghese and discover the secret symbolism in some of the paintings and the art works there.
Art lovers should also check out our Restoring Caravaggio tour in Rome city center – a unique Rome experience that introduces you to the life and work of the great Baroque artist and takes you to visit a world-class restoration lab where some of Caravaggio’s paintings have been restored and brought back to life and vivid colors. You will have the chance to see the restorers of Caravaggio at work, speak with them and have a glass of white wine together inside their lab surrounded by unvaluable Baroque and Renaissance masterpieces.
On your Rome city center itinerary towards the lab you will see some of Caravaggio most famous masterpieces, such as the moving Crucifixion of St Peter and the extraordinary series of St Matthew paintings, located in one of Rome’s most beautiful churches St Louis of the French. As well as learning all about Caravaggio you’ll also see works by other important artists, including Raphael and Bernini.
This 3 hour, intimate tour of Rome is the perfect introduction to the art and artists of the Eternal City – an experience that will stay with you forever.
Below the earth in Rome’s underground you’ll find one of the city’s greatest hidden treasures: Rome’s Catacombs. Rome’s Catacombs snake in a labyrinth, 50ft below the historic city. Roma Experience are proud to give you the chance to discover this amazing archaeological site, on either a private or small-group tour.
Both Catacombs tours will take you to the amazing Catacombs of Domitila and Basilica of St Clement – both foundational sights of Early Christianity. The private Catacombs tour has an additional element; you’ll visit the Capuchin Crypt. The Capuchin Crypt is decorated with the bones of over 3,700 friars. These macabre arrangements have fascinated thinkers for centuries – including the Marquis de Sade.
Rome’s Catacombs originate from the time of Ancient Rome, when the dead were buried underground due to lack of space above. One of the most fascinating aspects of Rome’s Catacombs of Domitila is how pagan and Christian graves lie side by side. You’ll see some of the earliest examples of Christian art in the Catacombs – including what many believe to be the first recorded instance of The Last Supper.
After the Catacombs, you’ll head to Basilica of St Clement. Not only is the Basilica of St Clement a remarkably beautiful 11th century church, with a fantastically rich golden mosaic over the apse, but it contains hidden wonders below. Underground you’ll find the remains of an earlier, 4th century Christian Basilica, with remarkable frescoes. Further still, you’ll find a Temple of Mithras. Discover the secrets of strange Roman mystery cults in this eerie but enchanting atmosphere.
