Join our expert guide for a tour of one of the best collections of Ancient Roman and Greek artefacts in the entire world. Inside the Naples Archaeological Museum are amazing treasures from Ancient Rome, Pompeii and Herculaneum.
Our guide will bring the history behind each fantastic piece to life – be it an evocative mosaic or a a statue of a bronze youth. Among astonishing examples of ancient art, you’ll discover the secret histories of the ancient world.
A private tour of the Naples Archaeological Museum offers a revelatory experience, where you can get close to some truly amazing artefacts from the Greco-Roman period. Before the collection was a museum, it belonged to the Bourbon family who once ruled Naples.
Most of the classical statuary in the collection once belonged to the Farnese family of Rome, who married into the Bourbon Kingdoms of Naples, Sicily and Spain. The Farnese Collection is a highlight of any visit to the Naples Archaeological Museum; you can see the astonishingly muscular Hercules and the Farnese Bull, both pulled from the baths of Ancient Rome.
In addition to a wealth of classical statuary, there are many astonishing mosaics on display in the Archaeological Museum. Most of these were taken from Pompeii and Herculaneum, the most famous among them is, of course, the mosaic of Alexander the Great, taken from the house of the Fawn.
Other highlights include the Bronze from the Villa of the Papyri. Few exceptional Roman bronze statues survived, but thanks to the destruction of Pompeii and the preservation in volcanic ash, Naples’ Archaeological Museum has many.
If you are feeling a little naughty, take a peek in The Secret Cabinet. For the majority of history, this collection of erotic art, taken from Pompeii and Herculaneum, was only allowed to be seen by ‘men of a mature age and known morals’. Although it is perhaps only appropriate for those of a mature age, women with loose morals are no longer prohibited – so, ladies, enjoy!
