Trento Christmas Market
The charming city of Trento, lying in the Adige Valley- the gateway between Italy and Northern Europe – is a perfect place in which to indulge in the festivities of the Christmas season. Inspired by a wonderful confluence of Italian and German traditions the Christmas market in Trento is special for many reasons, not least of which is its dramatic setting-the brooding presence of the Dolomites looms large in the background and abuts the two piazzas in which the market is held – Piazza Fiera Square and Piazza Cesare Battisti Square, but rather than dimming the atmosphere they add to the Christmas cheer created by the soft golden glow of thousands of fairy lights.
When you arrive in your private car, your highly knowledgeable and English-speaking driver will spend around 30 minutes outlining the history and cultural highlights of Trento. He may even recommend the best regional speciality nibbles to try like Casunzei, a pasta shaped like half-moons and stuffed with a mixture of potato and red cabbage. Thanks to the German influence Strudel of many flavours and apple fritters also abound. Why not try some Zelten – a richly spiced bread together with a glass of local mulled wine?

Merano Christmas Market
The advent season is a beautiful one in which to enjoy the delights of Merano – a gorgeous, little city nestled in South Tyrol. The first thing you will notice when you step out of your private car is the scent – the air is richly spiced with a myriad of Christmas flavours – cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, honey, sweet wine, lemon fresh cakes and melting chocolate jostle the heady waves of roasting meat and oven warm bread. If you can resist temptation long enough walk deep into the purpose-built markets and find the many charming little tea-houses serving, not only, a wide range of seasonal flavoured teas but also the finest mulled wine. These houses are heated and you will appreciate this in the crisp, often snowy air of South Tyrol. Hug your mug close and watch the steam rise as you gaze out upon the imposing central Christmas Tree festooned with rings of coloured light. Perhaps you will plan your path through the stalls – for there is indeed much to see and experience in your three golden hours.
